The only program of its kind in Northern California, the Rosa Parks Japanese Bilingual Bicultural Program (JBBP) is a Foreign Language in Elementary School (FLES) program, integrating instruction by native Japanese speaking Sensei with a rigorous core curriculum taught in English by credentialed teachers.

Founded in 1973 and at Rosa Parks since 2006, the result is a truly unique and rich learning experience – marked by academic excellence and proficiency in a second language* – in an environment that promotes community, diversity, and positive values. 

ローザ・パークス小学校日本語バイリンガル・バイカルチュアル・プログラム(JBBP)はサンフランシスコ市学区(SFUSD)に所属するユニークな公立小学校です。当校ではカリフォルニア州の教員免許を持つ教師による英語での一般教育課程の指導に加え、「小学校で外国語」Foreign Language in Elementary School (FLES)教授法で毎日、日本語を母国語とする「先生」により生きた日本語及び日本文化を学びます。1973年設立され、現在、学業や第二言語取得に適する地域性、多様性、前向きな姿勢、を推進する環境に恵まれた地域に隣接するローザパークス小学校に2006年より拠点を移しました。

Core Curriculum 基本カリキュラム

Core curriculum taught in English – language arts, math, science, and social studies are aligned with state and SFUSD requirements, with integrated Japanese language standards for each grade level. 

SFUSDとカリフォルニア州指導要綱に定められた一般教科、国語、算数、社会、理科は英語で授業が行なわれ、日本語教科は各学年の教育要綱に組み込まれています。

Japanese Curriculum 日本語のカリキュラム

Japanese language is delivered through formal classroom instruction and reinforced by “teaching language through culture and community.” Japanese celebrations and cultural traditions, arts and crafts, field trips, and more, provide meaningful context that leads to deeper language acquisition. Each class receives one hour daily instruction from native Japanese speaking Sensei, reinforced throughout the day by their classroom teachers.

日本語は通常のレッスンを通じて行われ、文化・地域(コミュニティ)交流により強化されます。日本のお祝い、伝統文化、芸術・工芸、遠足などより深い語学力習得に意味深い体験をすることができます。一日１時間日本語を母国語とする先生より学びます。各担任と先生が協力し合い、１日の間にもできるだけ日本語に触れる様に心がけています。

Curriculum

The cognitive advantages of learning a foreign language, particularly at younger ages, are many (1). Our pedagogical model falls within the framework of a content-related FLES (Foreign Language in Elementary School) program (2), where content learning in arts, science and social studies is maximized with Japanese language development through an array of daily learning experiences ranging from songs, arts + crafts, and experiments in kindergarten to speech competitions, journals, and live video-conferencing with peers in Japan in the upper grades.  Language proficiency is an explicit goal (3).

3. 芸術、理科、社会の授業は、歌、アート・クラフトを通じて行われる毎日の日本語学習、幼稚園での実験、スピーチ大会、日記、高学年時に行われる日本の学生との交流をビデオで行なうなど様々な体験を通じて最大限に引き出されます。さらに語学習得は明白な目標です。

In addition, language acquisition is heightened by native-speaking instructors - or Sensei - who work in close collaboration and across grade levels with credentialed classroom teachers to deliver approximately one hour of daily formal Japanese instruction.  Widely recognized as a benchmark of high quality foreign language programs, the Sensei model authentic linguistics and provide meaningful cultural context for learning that establish a solid foundation for advanced Japanese language proficiency over time and into the future. Listening and speaking skills are enhanced by reading, writing and grammar.

さらに、全学年を通じて、各担任と先生が協力し合い、一日１時間日本語を母国語とする先生より日本語を学ぶことによって、語学学習を最大限に高めることができます。高水準の語学プログラムとして、[日本語を母国語とする ]先生による教授法は将来上級者に上達する際に必要不可欠な知識や文化を学びます。聞き取り(リスニング)や会話は読み書き、文法の学習を通じて高められます。

Outside of the Japanese instructional hour - commonly referred to as Nihongo - Japanese is maximized throughout the day through classroom standards adhered to by our classroom teachers.  They include greetings, instructions, daily procedures, and basic classroom conversation.

3. After 6 years in JBBP, students can expect to meet third grade content standards for Japanese Language, established by the National Standards in Foreign Language Education Project.
